Where does fiction end, and where does the Anthropocene begin?
In an era where the boundaries between art, science, and technology are in a state of flux, endless possibilities arise.
This year’s WIP Arts & Technology Festival sets out to explore the multiple dimensions of creativity. With the general theme, Modes of Creation, the festival celebrates the complex intersections of art & technology and showcases modes by which technology nurtures, encourages, and amplifies human ingenuity; ultimately it comes to reveal how we engage with, question, and reimagine our present and future realities.
Visitors are invited to explore such a diverse range of approaches, techniques, and mindsets through the festival’s five thematic clusters* which suggest the modalities fostered by the convergence of art & technology. The clusters Made to Make, Control vs Material, Skin, Gamification of Life, and Care, present not only final artistic products, but most importantly the processes, dialogues, and synergies that lead to their realisation.
* Despite their thematic classification, Made to Make, Control vs Material, Skin, Gamification, and Care are not strictly spatially grouped. Artworks find their place next to those with common attributes, allowing us to delve into thematic overlaps and explore their shared narratives.
The act of creation is vividly tangible. This category explores how artistry and technology converge to bring ideas to life. Crafting soundscapes, conjuring up illuminating light installations, reinventing traditional manufacturing processes and crafting machine-making-machines, these projects exemplify the raw and tangible outcomes of our creative aspirations.
The captivating tension between control and deliverance of (im)materiality is explored in this thematic cluster. As artists become instigators and users of technological innovation, data is transformed into an artistic medium. By meticulously decoding the language of data and translating it into visual and sensory experiences, artists in this category attempt to bridge the gap between abstract information, inherent qualities of materials, affordances, and human comprehension.
In response to environmental challenges, artistic inquiries and responses on these matters take up profound responsibilities. This cluster explores how artists and technologists channel their creative energy towards raising awareness and fostering change. Through their works, we witness the transformative potential of art and technology synergies in advocating for a more sustainable future.
Holding together, separating, defining, containing, exposing, becoming; SKIN includes projects that look at both innate and external articulations of perceptual delimitations. Time, space, and memory – the main ingredients of human perception – are poetically put in focus as morphing “skins” in our anthropogenic evolution.
The disruptive power of the digital age is harnessed within this thematic. Interactive experiences and gamification are operationalized as catalysts for reshaping our understanding of technology’s role in society. Ultimately, this cluster challenges us to reconsider conventional norms and invites us to actively reimagine ourselves in the ongoing digital revolution.
