Strings and Fragments is a kinetic sound sculpture, animating 140 handmade pieces of clay. A homage to the movements of natural waves, seen abstractly, it parallels visual phenomena such as the reflections of moonlight on sea ripples; the illusion of indefinite vertical movement, as short, glowing stripes move into each other, merging and separating again.
These fragments try to capture the aura of such ever-changing strokes of light.
The project was developed as part of the Artist-in-Residence Program at Thinker Maker Space of CYENS.
Mihalis Shammas is a sound artist and designer from Cyprus, based in the Netherlands. His work is driven by an urge to create narrative objects and tools for musical expression. It spans over instrument making, performance, sound sculpture and installation work. In all these areas, he explores intricacies in movement and sound by animating simple materials, manifesting tensions between the mechanical and the chaotic.
