CHARRED presents a cluster of low-res hand-crafted paper replicas of burnt pine trees that were 3D-scanned from a forested site in Attica that was affected by the wildfires of the previous summer. The fabricated landscape stands as a result of a series of material transitions and overlaps (from organic matter to a digital 3D mesh and then back to the physical world through paper) that aims to provide a critical perspective on the mediatisation of wildfires in the Anthropocene, while addressing the concepts of fragility and resilience as points of contemplation for possible futures of habitation of the Mediterranean.
Eftychios Savvidis (b. 1988, Limassol, Cyprus) holds a Diploma in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens and an MA in Architecture & Historic Urban Environments from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Eftychios has worked as an architect in Athens, Nicosia, Pamplona and London. He has also taught architecture design studios at Ravensbourne University London, the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Cyprus.
Mariza Daouti (b. 1991, Athens, Greece) holds a Diploma in Architecture from the National Technical University of Athens and an MA in Architectural History from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. She has worked in architecture studios in Nicosia, Barcelona and London and taught in undergraduate courses of architecture at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, Ravensbourne University and Nottingham Trent University.
Mariza and Eftychios formed countercurrent as a research and design practice, building upon their previous collaboration in practising and teaching architecture, and a common interest in the intersections of environmental and urban transformations of territory, with a particular focus on socio-ecological landscapes of vulnerability and preservation.
