During this talk, we explore the relationship between cinema and videogames through the prism of interactive films, i.e. audiovisual texts that combine cinematic, interactive and gameplay elements. The thesis this talk is based on, views these cases as a unique intermedial genre, located between the two media, rather than texts that are clearly filmic or ludic.
The theoretical framework is outlined by theories on film, videogames, narrative, interactivity and gameplay, while the methodology is based on related concepts by scholars such as David Bordwell, Edward Branigan, Janet Murray and Marie-Laure Ryan, among others.
Eventually, the aim is to develop a framework through which to understand these texts in relation to notions of intermediality, interactivity and media convergence.
Giorgos has graduated from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with an Integrated Master’s (2019) and a Master of Arts (2021) in Film and Television Studies.
